The BIG Event

Well- - the solar eclipse has come and gone. It has been all the rage for a while, has it not? Actually, it was a pretty big deal in that a total eclipse is a unique episode that will not happen again (in this location) in our lifetime.

I read an article the other day that told of some interesting myths and customs that take place around the world during solar eclipses. Some include shooting arrows at the moon to “scare it away” so that the sun would shine again. A more wide-spread practice is for all pregnant women to stay inside with locked doors and closed windows during an eclipse because they believe exposure will cause birth defects. And in the Middle East some folks bang their pots and pans together during an eclipse to “frighten off the angry man in the moon.”

The list of these oddities goes on and on. I do not know why people would think and do such strange things. Looks like they could just do normal things like “get under the bed” during an eclipse like we were told as kids!

Seriously, as most of you know, these are just myths and superstitions that have been perpetuated for generations. People who are unacquainted with the Bible (or do not believe it) are often taken in by superstitions which tend to accompany any unusual occurrence in life. However, while an event like this might heighten our fascination, there is no reason for fear.

On the other hand, the Bible does speak of an event when the Lord Himself will return in judgment that will be far more than a time of fascination (cf. Acts 17:31). It will be an event that will cause the greatest of fear for those who are not prepared to meet Him. Concerning this great day, Peter wrote: “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10).

Unlike eclipses, the date for the Lord’s return we do not know. Jesus taught, “But of this day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only” (Matthew 24:36). He went on to warn that we are to “Watch” and “Be Ready” (vv. 42-44).

For those who heed His message, it will not be a day of fear, but a day of the greatest rejoicing man has ever known (Matthew 25:34)! Are you watching and ready for the BIG event?
