The Proof of Love

Fall is my favorite time of year. I love the cooler temperatures after a long, hot summer. I love watching the changing of leaves from green to the blazing colors of autumn. I love the deep shade of blue the sky takes on this time of year. I love…well, I could go on and on.

Even though this is my favorite time of year, each season (or any given day for that matter) has its own unique beauty. Every time I slow down enough to behold the beauty of God’s creation about us, I am reminded of how much God must love us to bless us in such a marvelous way. David wrote in the long ago, “The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard” (Psalm 19:1-2). Yes, the beauty of God’s love is manifested to the entire world through the things which He created.

On the other hand, God’s love is made even more evident in ways other than beauty. The prime example comes from a cruel and despised Roman cross used in Palestine 2000 years ago. Crosses were used for putting people to death in a shameful and excruciatingly painful way that is almost beyond description. It was upon one of these crosses that Jesus Christ, the Son of God Almighty, gave his life for the punishment of the sins of all mankind! The Bible teaches that “God demonstrated His love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8); further, “In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him” (I John 4:9). Yes, even in the ugliness of the cross, the brilliance of God’s love shines through!

Without question, God has done everything in His unlimited power to prove His love for us and how much He desires for us to be saved. So, how do we respond to such love? By loving Him back! How then do we express our love to Him? The Bible again provides the answer, “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments…” (I John 5:3). Thus, the next question is, “Are we doing all within our power to prove our love for Him?”
