Life Changing Events

It is not unusual while driving down the highway to pass by a marker that is a memorial to someone who has lost his or her life at that location. I know that you have seen them, too. Most of the time it is a little cross- - often draped with a wreath or bow accompanied by a picture of the victim and date the accident happened.

Every time I see one of these there are certain thoughts that come to mind. First, I am reminded of the pain and emptiness that fill the hearts of those who lost this person. There is nothing that cuts us quite as sharply nor as deeply as having to say good-bye to a loved one. All of us who have gone through this experience have no problem understanding the importance of these memorials to preserve the memories of those we have loved so much.

Secondly, I am reminded of the uncertainty of life. There is not a person on earth, regardless of age or anything else, who has a promise of tomorrow. The Bible teaches: “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit’; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this of that’” (James 4:13-15). No one knows how he will leave this life or when, but with absolute certainty we all know that we will.

Thirdly, I am reminded of how one event like this can change the lives of so many. Be it parent, child, sibling, spouse or friend, those who are left behind are never exactly the same again. In short, death is a life changing event. These little crosses continually remind us of that.

Finally, every time I see one of these little crosses, I can not help but think of the larger one, namely, the one on which Jesus died. It memorializes a change in the history of the world! And for all those who come to know Him, truly their lives will never be the same again!
