Beating The Odds

Some years ago, I read a truly inspirational story about a guy named Craig MacFarlane. Craig suffered a freak accident at the age of two which left him totally blind. Yet, despite what he calls this “minor inconvenience,” he is today acclaimed to be one of the world’s greatest athletes. Craig has collected 136 medals for his achievements. 103 of these are gold medals which were earned in sports such as: wrestling, downhill snow skiing, water skiing, and track and field. What is the secret of his success we ask? The answer rests largely in his attitude.

I suppose most of us who enjoy vision think that such accomplishments were near impossible. However, Craig “views” them from a totally different perspective. For example, he recalls the first time he attempted jumping ramps on water skis. After he had successfully completed a series of jumps, a reporter asked him how he managed to do so against the odds. Craig replied, “What odds? Since no blind man had ever done that before, there weren’t any odds!”

After reading this story it made me wonder, “Who sets the odds in our lives?” The world certainly tries by attempting to tell us what we should and should not do. And no doubt Satan does all he can to stack the odds against us to discourage us from Godly living. But when all is said and done, the only time in life that the odds are against us is when we allow them to be. Again, the key is in our attitude (Proverbs 23:7).

A Christian does not have to concern himself with “the odds” in life. In fact, the Bible assures us that as long as we walk in the steps of Jesus, victory is certain. Even when we face difficulties, we are given the confidence that God will see us through them (Psalm 34:19).

Yes, when our lives are in tune with the Master’s will, the odds are not against us- - but always in our favor! For, “If God be for us, who can be against us” (Romans 8:31)?
