Are You Searching For Peace?

One Saturday night an Emergency Room doctor was busy going from one bay to the next treating patients that came in on his shift. About midway through the shift, he picked up information to review before examining the next patient and he immediately recognized the name. In fact, it was that of a young man who was somewhat of a “regular visitor” to the ER. His frequent visits were not generated because he was accident-prone, but rather because he was prone to making bad decisions.

True to form, he was there to get stitched-up and bandaged from the latest barroom brawl in which he had participated- -if not instigated. This physician, who was a Christian, decided it was time to treat more than physical wounds.

Thus, after greeting his patient he then looked him in the eyes and pleaded, “Young man, how long do you think you can last like this? I know when you are young you feel ten feet tall and bullet proof, but you are not. This kind of life is going to catch up with you eventually and it may be too late for you to do anything about it.”
“Oh Doc, there is nothing to worry about,” the young man protested. “Look, if I get cut, you can sew me up. If something gets broken, you can set it. If I get an infection, you have drugs to heal me. So, what’s the problem?”

The doctor stared at him for a moment and then replied, “Yes, I can help you with some physical problems- - but what about your mind? As advanced as modern medicines and techniques are, they cannot provide you with happiness, contentment and peace of mind which you obviously long for, but have yet to find. These are only gained by surrendering your life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.”

I do not know if this young man heeded the advice, but he should have- - and so should everyone! Jesus taught, “These things have I spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). True peace only comes by surrendering to the Prince of Peace.

So, what about you? Are you searching for peace? Have you been looking for happiness and contentment in all the wrong places? If so, consider these inspired words, “Be anxious in nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guards your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6, 7).
