The Unseen Enemy

I have to admit, it is strange to walk into a grocery store these days and have a worker roll a shopping cart to me that he has just finished disinfecting. It is odd to see the shoppers walking around in the store with masks and wearing gloves. It is also rather bizarre to be checked out by a clerk that is dressed with a mask and gloves and standing behind a sheet of Plexiglas separating the two of us.
Oh, not that it is a bad thing, just very different from what you and I have been accustomed to in the past. Is this the new normal for us? Certainly it will be for a while, but no one knows how long. I believe, however, that this too shall pass sooner or later- - but hopefully sooner than later.

As we live, we learn to deal with a lot of trials in life. Covid-19 is just one more to add to the list. One of the biggest things that alarms us about a virus is that it is an unseen enemy. We do not always know where it might be or even who might be a carrier. But I wish we could see it! Then we would know where and what to avoid. Instead, all we see are the devastating effects it produces.

You know, when you think about it, Satan operates using the same game plan. He too is an unseen enemy. Of course, we think we know what he looks like- - a man in a red suit with a long tail, horns on his head and a pitchfork in his hand. I wish that were the case! Then we could recognize him and steer clear. But like a virus, all we see is the devastating destruction he leaves in his wake.
Further, the Bible teaches us that Satan is our unseen enemy (Matthew 13:39) who has access to the whole world (cf. 1 John 5:19). Hence, as long as man has been on the earth we have struggled with the pandemic of sin.

However, there is one major distinction in this analogy. There is no present cure for the pandemic of Covid-19. There is an ever present cure for the pandemic of sin! (Ephesians 1:7).
