I remember reading an article that appeared in the Memphis “Commercial Appeal” several years ago that has stuck with me. It was about a tragic accident that happened to a precious six-year-old boy. He lived with his family in an apartment complex on the outskirts of Memphis.

One day he was out playing near their apartment and his little-boy-curiosity led him to an electrical transformer box. While this is certainly not a play area, ordinarily it would not have created an issue because of safety precautions. However, that particular day was different. The last person who had serviced the box had left it unlocked. Long story short, the youngster was so severely burned on his arms that they both had to amputated.

I do not know the backstory as to why the door was left unlocked. I feel confident it was an accident. It might have just been an oversight of a technician after a long day. Perhaps he or she had to leave momentarily and thought it would be okay to leave it unlocked. Whatever the case, it was one of those little things that turned out to have big consequences.

Little things almost always produce big outcomes whether bad or good. For example, words spoken in anger or inconsiderate actions might seem small to those who speak or do them. But they might leave deep scars on those to whom they were spoken or done.

On the other hand, kind words or loving actions might seem small to those who say or do them. Yet, they may mean the world to those who receive them (cf. Proverbs 25:11).
Certainly God rewards the “small things” as well as the “big things.” Jesus taught, “Whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward” (Matthew 10:42).

The lesson is simple. Little things can be big!
