The story is told that shortly after the Korean War, a night watchman came across a young Korean boy who was seeking shelter on the streets. The watchman instructed the boy to go to a certain house and when a person answered the door he was to say, “John 3:16.”

To the boy it seemed a strange thing to do, because he had no idea what “John 3:16” meant; nevertheless, he decided to give it a try. So, he went to the house and when a lady came to the door he mumbled in a low voice, “John 3:16.”

To his surprise, the lady invited him to come in out of the cold and was given a place to sit by the fire. The boy thought to himself, “I do not know what John 3:16 is, but it sure makes a cold Korean boy warm.”

Seeing the boy was thin and frail, the kind lady soon offered the lad a warm bowl of soup. As he ate and the hunger pangs subsided, the boy thought again, “I do not know what John 3:16 is, but it sure makes a hungry Korean boy full.”

Soon afterward, he was encouraged to take a hot bath and given clean pajamas to keep him warm through the night. And yes, he was even provided with a comfortable bed. While lying in it, tears flowed down his cheeks as he said to himself, “I do not know what John 3:16 is, but it sure makes a strange lady love a lonely Korean boy.”

As we know, there is no special blessing in merely saying, “John 3:16.” However, when we come to accept and respond to the powerful truth it reveals (like the lady), then we are motivated to show our gratitude by doing all we can to share God’s love with others. John further penned, “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another” (1 John 4:11).

So, do you know what John 3:16 is? If not, I can tell you, it sure gives worth to those who feel worthless; it sure gives hope to those who feel hopeless and it sure provides accurate starting directions for those who are lost.
