How Does Your World Smell?

One day a Dad found a few minutes to slide into his recliner and make a small withdrawal from the sleep bank. When the kids heard him snoring from the other room, they decided to play a little trick on him. They found some Limburger cheese in the refrigerator and smeared a dab under his nose. Of course, the potent smell soon awoke the sleeping man. As he regained consciousness he began to frown and sniff.

With a scowl on his face he arose from his chair and walked from one room to another throughout the house, sniffing all the way. After a bit, the man walked outside and sniffed some more. He scratched his head for a moment, and then concluded: “Mercy me! The whole world stinks!”

Some years back, Country Music recording artist Don Williams sang, “Lord, I hope this day is good. I’m feeling empty and misunderstood…”. Do you ever have those days? You know, the ones where it seems the whole world stinks? Well, welcome to the real world! Everybody has those days every once in a while. They may come because somebody has smeared a little “Limburger” under our nose- - or for reasons completely unknown, but one thing is for sure, they do come.

God never promised even His faithful follower’s exemption from the trials of life. “So”, someone might ask, “What advantage is there then to living the Christian life?” More than I have space to answer, but one that is appropriate here is that He promises to see us through even the trying times of life. “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we may boldly say: ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’” (Heb. 13:5-6).

So the next time you have one of those days when it seems that the whole world stinks, remember two things. One, these days are common to everyone. And, two, with the help of God we can deal with any stench that the world sends our way (Philippians 4:13).
