I am not a card-carrying birdwatcher, but when I have the time I love to sit out on my deck and let them entertain me. They are beautiful and full of wonder like all of God’s creation. As Job said, “Ask the beasts, and they will teach you; and the birds of the air will tell you… that the hand of the Lord has done this, in whose hand is the life of every living thing” (Job 12:7-10).

Here is a tidbit about birds that you may not know. Have you ever considered how a bird can stay on a perch in a wind storm or even sleep on one without falling off? Well, once again the design of God shines brightly. The answer is found in the tendons of the birds legs. When a bird lands on a perch, it bends its knees causing the tendons to tighten and the toes to lock firmly around the perch, thus keeping the bird secured.

Every time I think about that, I am reminded that the bended knee of a bird and the “bended knee” of a Christian have a lot in common. A “bended knee” keeps us anchored and secure even in storms and yes even while we sleep. Paul taught, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6, 7).

Do you find yourself worrying? Do you often feel fearful and insecure? Do you feel vulnerable to the vicissitudes of life? If so, maybe you can learn a lesson from birds that the “bended knee” makes all the difference!
