As Christians, we should put God first in all we do. There is no question that He is the all-wise, all-knowing, all-powerful and all-loving Heavenly Father. Also, the Bible instructs us that we are to seek Him first in all things (cf. Matthew 6:33; 1 Corinthians 10:31).

“All” means there is nothing that should be excluded from this principle- - no, not even political matters. That being said, there are two things I would encourage all eligible voters to do as an election day is looming.

The first is to exercise your right to vote. Be concerned enough about our nation that you help decide which candidates are best suited for their respective office. It is a wonderful privilege and blessing that we live in a country where each citizen has a voice in our leadership. Sadly though, we are told that over 20% of U.S. citizens are not even registered to vote. Further, in our last presidential election only 58% of eligible voters actually voted. So, I would encourage you to vote!

Secondly, I would encourage you to ask God’s counsel for which candidate you should vote. Political ads are often more confusing than helpful. Thus, if we are uncertain, remember the Bible teaches: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given him” (James 1:5).

In the long ago, Israel got in trouble by entering a covenant with the Gibeonites which God had forbidden them to do. The Gibeonites deceived them into thinking that they were someone they were not. However, that would have never happened if Israel had only “asked the counsel of the Lord” (Joshua 9).

This election is like most others in that there are moral issues at stake. That means that Christ expects those that wear His name to take their stand for Him, regardless of which candidate or party that might be (Psalm 107:2). While that will never be a person of perfection, it should be the one who most upholds the will of God.

So, once again, I would encourage everyone who is eligible to vote. And just as important, don’t forget to take Jesus with you!
