Let Us Be Thankful!

After explaining the meaning of Thanksgiving, a first grade teacher asked her class simply, “What are you thankful for?” Immediately hands went up around the room. One little girl said she was thankful for her parents; a little boy said he was thankful for his puppy- - and so the answers went as each student was eager to give his answer.

As the answers wound down, the teacher noticed one boy did not raise his hand. “Jimmy, can you think of something you are thankful for?” she asked. “Yes ma’am,” he quickly replied, “I am thankful I am not the turkey!” Ah, the mind of a child!

During this season our minds are focused upon being thankful. As we gather with family and friends and enjoy God’s blessings together, let us consider the following things for which we should be thankful.

God has given us something to live ON! Psalm 19:1 teaches, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.” Not only did He give us this beautiful earth, but He also gave us everything we need to sustain life (Acts 17:25). Let us then be thankful!

God has given us something to live BY! Psalm 119:105 instructs, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Everything that pertains to life and Godliness is found in the Word of God (II Peter 1:3). He doesn’t just give us rules, but principles and examples as well. For this, too, let us be thankful!

God has given us something to live FOR! In John 14:2 we read, “In My Father’s house are many mansions….” God has prepared heaven for all of us. Yet, it is up to us to decide if we are willing to accept His invitation and meet Him on His terms to get there (cf. Matthew 11:28-30). It is because of God’s great love and grace that this invitation is extended- - and for that also, we should be thankful!

God has given us someone to live WITH! Family and friends are priceless. Can you imagine what it would be like to own all the silver and gold in the world and not have anyone to share it with? The real value in living is found in our relationship with God and one another. When we learn that, we will be thankful!

James writes, “Every good and every perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights...” (James 1:17). Thus, while it is a great thing that our country sets aside a holiday for thanksgiving- - in reality we have numerous reasons to make every day a day of thanksgiving!
