We Need To Pay Attention!

Have you ever discovered something that you could have discovered long before if you had just been paying attention? Let me explain. About a year ago my wife decided it was time to change the color in our master bathroom. Of course, as most of us have learned by experience, when you start a project like this- - one thing leads to another. So, what started out with changing the color of the paint, led to new curtains and then new towels, which led to new… well you know how the story goes.

Included in this “little” updating job were a couple of new plaques with inspirational messages that went on the walls on both sides of our vanity. Now keep in mind that this took place about a year ago. Yet, if you had asked me a week ago what the message was on either plaque I could not have told you.

But the other morning as I was getting ready for the day, I happened to look up and my eyes focused on the one that has been hanging within two feet of my head for twelve months. The message only contained four words, but they have stuck with me now for four days. It says simply, “Be Awesome Every Day.”

Now I have to be honest and say I have a lot of work to do to be awesome every day, but the message has made me do a lot of thinking. First and foremost, I was reminded that Christians serve an awesome God and we should strive to be like Him (cf. Deuteronomy 7:21; Matthew 5:48). But what really got the cogs turning in my head is that He desires for each one us to have an awesome life- - every day! He declared for His people, “I came that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

So, let us consider just one component of that abundant life- - happiness. Surely, most of us agree that life would be awesome if we could just find lasting happiness. As a result, countless people are desperately searching every day, yet they cannot seem to find it.

But note, Jesus taught almost 2000 years ago, “These things have I spoken to you, that My joy might remain in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11). This message and the means of achieving it have been in our reach for centuries. Yet, many are still looking for what has been right at their fingertips all along.

So, we need to pay attention to God’s word (cf. 2 Timothy 3:16, 17). It is awesome! And it will make us awesome!
