We ALWAYS Need God!

The other day I happened to look up at the gutters on my house and noticed that pine needles were hanging over the edge around where the down spouts are connected. Of course, this was not the first time this had happened. We have a few pine trees near our house and it seems that when we have enough wind to dislodge the pine needles they like to find refuge in my gutters. Then we get rain and they all get washed to the downspout and clog it up. That means the gutters are not going to work properly (if at all) until they are cleaned.

Therefore, I got out my extension ladder and went to work. It is not a hard job, but due to the height of my gutters in certain areas it can be a little challenging. I am not particularly afraid of heights, but I am respectful of them. As usual with this job, I saved my steepest climb until the very last. So, I extended my ladder as far as it would go to reach the highest peak. I then carefully climbed as high as I could go to remove the unwanted pine needles.

When I reached the top, for whatever reason, the thought passed through my mind that two of my friends had recently fallen off ladders. As I contemplated that, I happened to look down at the ground which suddenly appeared to be about a mile-and-a half away! I knew that if I fell nothing good was going to come from it. Hence, I quickly came to the conclusion that this would be an excellent time to pray. And I did! Obviously, God heard the prayer because I lived to tell the story.

But there is something else I gained from this experience that I want to share with you. After my prayer I went about cleaning out the last of the renegade pine needles. But as I finished and made my descent on the ladder another thought occurred to me. While I surely needed God on top of a ladder, I also need Him just as much on the ground! So I prayed again!

The lesson is: we always need God; there are just certain times in life when we are more aware of it than others. That is why the Bible teaches us to “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17); and to “Be anxious in nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).
Yes, we always need God! But also remember that He stands ready to fulfill our every need (Philippians 4:19)!
