A Time To Slow Down

by Stan Dean

A few days ago, when we were experiencing the heavy rain, I got up about 4:30 a.m. and headed off to the gym.  It was still dark outside and the rain was really coming down making the vision for driving rather difficult.

As I traveled into the driving rain I remembered instruction from my old Driver's Education days.  My instructor, Coach Flurry, taught that there are posted laws and there are laws of nature; meaning, there are times when nature would prohibit safe driving at the posted speed limit.  For example, even though the legal speed limit on the interstate might be 70 mph, if the road is covered with snow and ice, you would be well advised to choose a much slower speed.

I was driving under the posted speed limit that morning, but when I went across the Blue Water Bridge on Highway 72, I felt the uneasy feeling of my back wheels hydroplaning.  Thankfully, it did not cause me to have an accident, but it definitely caused me to slow down even more the rest of the way.

That experience reminds me a lot of life.  We live in such a busy world and often travel life's highway as fast as we can go (and sometimes a little too fast).  And while there is nothing intrinsically wrong with hard work and multi-tasking, there is a time for all of us when it is necessary to take our foot off the accelerator.  God said through the Psalmist: "Be still and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).

We might think that we have everything under control, but when we get the uneasy feeling that we have lost our spiritual traction, it should serve as a not-so-subtle reminder to slow down.  We need to slow down and spend more time in the Word (2 Timothy 2:15); spend more time in prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17); spend more time in worship (Matthew 6:33); and spend more time in service (Matthew 25:31-46).

Take note of the warning signs.  Don't wait until you spin out of control.  By then, it just might be too late!
